Maybe you’ve heard of boudoir photography, maybe you haven’t. Either way, I’m here to help answer all your questions and get you ready to have the best, most fun time of your life! Warning: it will probably get pretty steamy up in here!
The word “Boudoir” is french and means “a woman’s private sitting room or salon” – are you already picturing the classy, vintage glam? Like Mr. Darcy PLEASE. Anyway – I digress! These days when you hear someone say “boudoir” they are probably referencing a photography session where you wear sexy outfits (and that term does NOT just mean lingerie but, more on that later) and pose for some cheeky, sultry pictures.
Many people choose too do a session like this as a gift for their significant other before the wedding – but it’s honestly a great gift for your SO anytime!
While a lot of people take boudoir photos to give them as a gift that’s not the only reason to do them! A boudoir session can also be a huge confidence booster/self-empowerment opportunity! They can also just be for fun! There’s no rule that says they HAVE to have a purpose.
My biggest advice when it comes to preparing for your boudoir session is to RELAX and over-prepare! Pack extra outfits, bring everything you’d need for touch ups etc, hydrate, eat light (you don’t want to feel sluggish), and make sure you are ready the night before so you don’t feel rushed the day of! Rushing is never fun and you don’t want to show up flustered. Also, I highly recommend having your hair and makeup done by a professional! When you look good, you feel good!
The typical answer to this is: Lingerie. And that is a great option! But doing a boudoir session is about feeling YOUR best, not anyone else’s best. You’re empowering your sexuality and yourself. If you feel good in lingerie you should wear that. If you feel good in jeans and a bra, wear that. You see where I’m going with this?
That said I recommend having 2-3 categories of outfits. Something super sexy (whatever that means to you), something more casual, and something meaningful (think his old college football jersey, her favorite leather jacket, or just something you know your SO will love or means something to the two of you.

Believe it or not “Dudeoir” is a thing! Body positivity and self-love is for everyone! No matter your age, gender, size, race, etc – boudoir is for you! The important thing is to make sure you and your photographer are both comfortable before the session. That means communicating your vision and ideas and making sure you are on the same page!
In a word? Yes. Whether you’re doing them for your SO or for yourself as long as you are comfortable and having fun a boudoir session is a fantastic idea!
If you are planning to give your photos to someone as a gift there are lots of great ways to do it! You can create a book, a calendar, or a box of prints (I offer all of these options in my print shop!) Just make sure you schedule your session far enough in advance to get the photos back and create, print, and receive your gift!
